UK MPs’ threat to the Church over same-sex marriage

IF the Church of England were to defy the politically correct establishment and refuse to change its teaching on the heterosexual nature of marriage, might MPs intervene?

Former Conservative MP Sir Tony Baldry and Labour MP Ben Bradshaw think MPs have the right to tell the Church what it should believe, teach and practise. Last week they wrote separately to the Times saying that ‘time is running out’ for the C of E to allow clergy and parishes to marry or bless same-sex couples. 

As Second Church Estates Commissioner from 2010 to 2015, Sir Tony used to field parliamentary questions on the Church by law established. Mr Bradshaw is a member of the parliamentary Ecclesiastical Committee.

Sir Tony’s letter appeared on Monday: ‘The House of Bishops will shortly come forward with their conclusions on same-sex relationships, which will be presented for debate at General Synod in February . . . It is important to note that because the Church of England is an established church, its canons are part of the laws of England, approved by parliament. I have little doubt that if the church cannot find a way forward that enables clergy either to marry same-sex couples or to bless their weddings, MPs will soon feel the need to intervene to change the law. The Church of England is running out of time here.’

Mr Bradshaw’s letter on Tuesday said: ‘Sir Tony Baldry is right to say time is running out for the Church of England to allow priests and parishes that wish to marry or bless same-sex couples . . . Anglicans in Scotland and soon, in Wales, who are in same-sex relationships may get married or receive a blessing in church, while those in England may not. This is not a sustainable position for an established church if it wants to retain that status and the privileges and duties that come with it.’

From an orthodox Anglican perspective, the Rev Dr Ian Paul, a member of the General Synod and of the Archbishops’ Council, warned in his own letter tothe Times on Tuesday: ‘If parliament intervenes and tells the Church what it must believe, it will be overturning the institutional independence of 100 years, and we will join that group of countries where the state takes precedence over religious belief and individual conscience.’

That group of countries happens to include China and North Korea. Would the prospect of Britain being thrown in with these two Communist dictatorships deter MPs in the present House of Commons from changing the Church’s doctrine and practice on marriage and sexual morality without its consent?

Unfortunately, the MPs in the present House of Commons have previous on voting for totalitarian Communist measures. They voted overwhelmingly for the lockdowns in 2020 and 2021. So surely it would not be too difficult for Mr Bradshaw and his allies to persuade a majority of MPs to force the Church to ‘get up with the programme’, in the phrase of the then Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron in the House of Commons after the General Synod initially refused to endorse women bishops in 2012. This time around getting up with the programme would involve the Church ditching its traditional teaching on marriage and embracing the sexual revolution.

The Church’s biblical teaching, as set out in Canon B30 of its rule book, is strikingly countercultural and therefore very vulnerable under the prevailing reign of wokery: 

‘The Church of England affirms, according to our Lord’s teaching, that marriage is in its nature a union permanent and lifelong, for better for worse, till death them do part, of one man with one woman, to the exclusion of all others on either side, for the procreation and nurture of children, for the hallowing and right direction of the natural instincts and affections, and for the mutual society, help and comfort which the one ought to have of the other, both in prosperity and adversity.’

Even if orthodox parishes and clergy are allowed to refuse to host same-sex weddings or blessings, as Sir Tony proposes in his letter, MPs will have forced the Church to relativise its teaching if they pass legislation authorising such services.

The Church may choose to forsake its traditional teaching this year. If it does not, it would be wise to expect sanctimonious outrage from the neo-Marxists in charge of parliament, the civil service and the mainstream media. Amidst the storm of state-sponsored persecution, would not the Church’s ability to keep its head depend on its members’ taking to heart Jesus Christ’s exhortation to his true followers to fear God and not people?

‘And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell’ (Matthew chapter 10 verse 28, King James Version).

General Armageddon’ sacked? Not exactly Ukraine

 THE Western media portrays Russian President Putin’s appointment of Valery Gerasimov as commander of the Special Military Operation in Ukraine as a demotion or humiliation for the present theatre commander, Sergei Surovikin, nicknamed ‘General Armageddon’. May I (as usual) beg to differ somewhat?

This move takes place against the background of the fall of Soledar, the likely envelopment and capture of Bakhmut and as a consequence, the abandonment of Ukrainian counter-offensives to the south, using the forces intended for that mission to hold the line in the Donbas. It could be argued therefore that the Russians have been shaping the battlespace for something else, fixing Ukrainian reserves and creating favourable force ratios elsewhere, as I have already argued. Moreover, although Nato armoured vehicles will not arrive in time to make any difference to the conduct of operations in the short term – the delivery times, training requirement, spares packages and training for maintenance crews and the supply of ammunition are all major muscle movements requiring at least three months – by the late spring, Ukrainian combat power will begin to increase. Russian action is probably imperative, therefore, before that occurs. If this is the case, then what is happening is an increase in the scale of Russian operations, with the opening of several fronts. Surovkin retains his command but becomes one of several subordinates subject to a wider span of command and control, a more senior, experienced commander and a more capable theatre-level staff.

The appointment of Valery Gerasimov, although it is without doubt a game changer, will not surprise military professionals and analysts. He is already Chief of the Defence Staff. He played a key role in the annexation of the Crimea in 2014, engineered the support for Assad in Syria and designed the initial plans for the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He is also one of the Russian military’s most serious intellects. His speech to the Russian Academy of Military Sciences in February 2013 (1) along with a report on hybrid warfare has been much quoted and has led to the definition of a style of warfare known as ‘the Gerasimov Doctrine’. In fact, the style of warfare he described had been under development for twenty years as the foundation of renewed Russian confrontation with the West and is more usually known as the Primakov doctrine, after former foreign and prime minister, Yevgeny Primakov. As I have described before in this medium, the doctrine stresses the use of both military and non-military means of warfare, with the emphasis being on non-military means to the ratio of four to one. These non-military means include, of course, economic warfare, especially energy – diplomacy and nuclear blackmail. In addition, Gerasimov and Primakov emphasise ‘the importance of controlling the information space and the real-time coordination of all aspects of a campaign, in addition to the use of targeted strikes deep in enemy territory and the destruction of critical civilian as well as military infrastructure.’ (2) Sounds familiar?

How much warning did Gerasimov have for this appointment? It is unlikely to have been sprung on him and he will have insisted on time to prepare – the thought of refusing would never have entered his head. This probably means that a switch by the Russians from primarily defensive tactics to offensive is imminent. The Orthodox Christmas is now over, the damage to Ukraine’s infrastructure has been deep and Ukrainian casualties dreadful. Russian preparatory moves and the re-training of reservists are likely to be complete. The weather is favourable. Nato chiefs meet next on January 20 and perhaps need to be given something to think about.

Gerasimov will take a broad view over the whole theatre of operations. He has a number of options open to him, all of which will include the use of air and sea delivered weapons and deep strikes: capitalise on success around Bakhmut and bounce the Kramatorsk/Slovyansk line; push north from Soledar to meet a simultaneous thrust southwards from Belgorod along the Oskil River; or push north from Ugledar to link up with Bakhmut. All these options would envelop and destroy large numbers of Ukrainian regular troops. Any of them could also be combined with a move south from Belarus to cut the Nato supply line around Lvov.

Of course, the success of any move depends, as ever, on a far more professional performance by Russian battlefield units. If this does not materialise then this appointment will prove as much of a poisoned chalice for Gerasimov, however glittering his career to date, as to his predecessors.

The Four Stages of Societal Collapse and Thiel's Libertarian Challenge

Rewatching this video of a defector from the Soviet Union in 1985 in context of our post Covid society connected some dots. Those dots were about what Yuri describes in this video as the "Demoralization" stage of the four-stage KGB process.

Separately, Peter Thiel recently offered his view of three dystopian futures being offered by competing ideologies, and the challenge to the Libertarian right to offer a competing better vision of the future.

But first, the 4 stages of Societal collapse as Yuri Bezmenov describes above offer a nice roadmap to how we got here to begin with. The four stages of US societal collapse as the KGB prophet says are:

1. Demoralization: in which people are (re)educated according to your own ideology- Pressure to conform
2. Destabilization: in which essentials like economy, foreign relations, and defense pacts/systems are disrupted- E.G. supply chains, Nato, Etc
3. Crisis: a confluence of events on the back of the previous two steps creates existential crisis for the status quo.- Constantly threatened
4. Normalization: during the crisis a “force for good” will appear that promises some return to normalcy. We welcome despotic solutions to immediate problems.-  Rise of authoritarianism and reduction in liberty

This reads like a playbook for the last two years, and perhaps going as far back as the GFC of 2009.  The stages  occur simultaneously and need reapplication like so many vaccine boosters until compliance is 100%.

 

The Media’s Role in Demoralization

The MSM has been revealed beyond the pale to be a water-carrier for elites (a Trump dividend BTW) and in return for their subservience the media gets to manipulate and monetize our emotions.

Social media, despite it also being a tool of manipulation, has enabled our education on this same fake-news revelation to be in real time.

Unfortunately, this now enables even less reliable sources (influencer types) to step into the truth-breach created by our enlightenment and post bullshit that years ago would have been seen as just that, Bullshit.

So now in light of being sensitized to just how much we’ve been lied to, and how right the conspiracy theorists have been (and continue to be) on so many issues, many give equal weighting to this Bullshit as to the conventional MSM. The water has been so muddied we do not know what to believe anymore. That is prime hunting ground for political and ideological opportunists.

As our KGB friend says above:

The goal is to change the perception of reality of every American to such an extent that despite the abundance of information, noone is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interests of defending themselves, their families, their community and their country.

The smart opportunists ( Soviet, Maoist, and now WEF types) see this lack of ability to believe as making dividing (atomizing) and then conquering (brainwashing) people that much easier. In fact, Atomization is the process whereby they get us to give up on trying to come to sensible conclusions on anything.

 

Perverting Libertarianism

We want to focus on Political Atomization a bit here. To describe Political Atomization, it might be better to first define Atomism on which it is based.

Atomism Societal Theory Says:

All social values, institutions, developments and procedures evolve entirely out of the interests and actions of the individuals who inhabit any particular society. The individual is the "atom" of society and therefore the only true object of concern and analysis.

Sounds logical to us. Sounds like a Libertarian concept. And it is right. Coherent societies are based on shared beliefs of individuals that understand the intersection of what is best for them also being what is best for societal longevity. Venn diagram stuff. Everyone has some libertarianist in them no matter how far left they view themselves. A big component of it is self-interest. The other part is how that self interest helps keep society well mannered.

Enter Political Atomization, a perversion and opportunistic application of Libertarian Atomism.

In physics: Atomization refers to breaking bonds in some substance to obtain its constituent atoms in gas phase. By extension, it also means separating something into fine particles, for example: process of breaking bulk liquids into small droplets. like a spray bottle.

If water is really just a bunch of molecules bunched together we can manage and recombine them for our own interests as we see fit if we first divide them. That is, spray them in the air and isolate them. Atomize, re-sort to  preferred groupings, then recombine as you need. Turns out it works with people too.

 

Divide and Conquer Through Atomization

Political Atomizaton is a  process where people are divided by twisting the principle of individualism and using that belief (the libertarian in all of us) to first divide us. Then the atomizers can remold us (by telling us to reorganize into different sub groups) as they see fit for their own purposes. Purposes like: to get votes, add power, make money etc.

It is a process whereby beliefs are changed on the lines of self-interest without societal cohesion by first dividing societal members amongst themselves. Put them in different rooms and send cops in to work on them basically. The prisoner's dilemma applied to a country, if you will. Remember what Covid did? The more we are atomized (divided) the easier it is for us to be conquered.

 

Weak-Minded Minions

Most weak-minded (weak-willed etc for whatever reason) people are sorted by this eventually. You know who they are. The types screaming for special treatment when there just aren’t enough resources to handle these increasingly narrow requests. They become willing tools of the powerful. Minions who do not even know they are minions.

Those types have either been atomized and retrained or educated at birth (as the KGB guy says). That leaves those who are not weak-minded: The vocal dissidents (independent voices) and the quiet (middle class) holdouts.

The dissidents will have been de-platformed (i.e. permanently banned, censored, or worse). The holdouts (middle-class libertarian types) will have re-prioritized their lives and dropped out of the fight.

Eventually, one by one, those that are neither weak-minded nor disposed of get tired of arguing (being manipulated to argue) and drop out of the bullshit. Loss of faith forces these people to pull in the reins over time.

That intelligent but isolated (atomized) libertarian holdout will eventually withdraw, choosing to believe nothing except his core values after having his buttons pushed by so many oppositional forces. Some will go off the grid. Most will “grin and bear it” as they live day by day to support loved ones. This is the empty space created by societal division and apathy.

It’s that apathy the power ideologues want which will enable the truly corrupt types to then take control. Then we get the next stages of Destabilization ( which we may be in right now), Crisis, and Normalization described above.

And that will be the beginning of the end. The crisis starts, and then the Normalization can happen. A solution is proffered by the new savior who will help return things to normal again. But what he is really doing is normalizing despotic tyranny.

 

Thiel is Right: Libertarianism Has Not Offered an Alternative Vision Yet

Note in the EU ‘s case that savior is “hyper-environmentalism”. But democracy and individual liberty isn’t even on the list anymore.

FWIW: to be fair: Thiel is saying the Libertarian right has not offered a narrative or story to counter the other stories. People are influenced by narratives. The Libertarian  narrative-story is "Freedom" which ain't selling these days sadly.

Consider what Thiel is saying as a European. There are two different worst-case scenarios (stage 3 Crises in the KGB playbook up top) floating around over there: Sharia immigration over-running Europe, and Russo/Chinese totalitarianism. But you also have the WEF benevolently saying “Hyper-environmentalism will save all of you if you just submit to it”

Given those three worst case scenarios, and only the last one remotely (but disingenuously) promising you will be able to have a place to live, is it any wonder the WEF will get its way when your other choices are intifada beheading, or a Maoist technocratic labor camp?

 Your Work and Your Faith Are Not Separate

Our men’s group at church is doing a study on the book Lies Men Believe And The Truth That Sets Them Free by Robert Wolgemuth. We were tasked with picking one of the lies to teach and give a testimony on. 

To start, I highly recommend the book. It’s a very easy read and you can jump around to the different lies you might be telling yourself right now to learn a lot. I scanned the list of lies and stumbled on lie number twenty-nine “my faith and my work are unrelated.” It sounded a lot like the lie that I was telling myself for many years when I started my first business. The same lie I believed when I began my journey chasing fame and fortune in Silicon Valley. I knew this was the lie I would teach on.

The chapter starts out with the story of Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, who the authors notedly point out is someone we forever think of as a “troll.” I laughed out loud when I read this because I certainly consider myself to be a troll in the context of online discourse. Now of course the context for Zacchaeus is different—troll referring to his height— but the use of the word in this chapter still spoke to me as a confirmation that I had picked the right lie to teach on. 

The authors point out that Zacchaeus was a “notorious sinner,” and aren’t we all? This certainly caused people to grumble when Jesus wanted to spend time directly with him. In Luke 19:8 we learn that Zacchaeus was repentant of his sins when he says “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything I restore it fourfold.” 

Zacchaeus was demonstrating that he was prepared to follow Christ in every area of his life including with his money and his work. We must be willing to follow his example. Our culture doesn’t care that Jesus is the King of our own precious little hearts in private, but the second we say that Jesus is the King of kings and that all nations belong fully to His authority; suddenly the worldly culture has a big problem with us. 

The authors note Matthew 5:14-16, which states “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before there, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” 

We aren’t called to be Christians on Sunday or only in the privacy of our own homes. We must live for all of Christ, all of our life, in every area of our lives. Including at work. Men often convince themselves of the lie that they need to hide their faith at work in order to advance or prevent someone at work from getting “offended.” This is a big lie. One that I told myself for years. 

When I started my first business I was living a double life. I was “Tech Entrepreneur Andrew” during the week and “Christian Andrew” at home and on the weekends. Matthew 6:24 tells us that “No man can serve two masters: for he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Is this not exactly what we are doing when we tell ourselves this lie? By the grace of God after many years I had finally recognized that I was telling myself this lie and it was time to make a choice. I could go all-in on “Worldly Tech Entrepreneur Andrew” or I could become Christian Tech Entrepreneur Andrew and serve Christ and others with my work. The choice was clear. I was going to start living out my faith and glorifying God in every area of my life, including my work. 

What did that look like for me? It meant that I stopped being afraid to share Bible verses online in front of millions of people. It means I no longer fear sharing my spiritual struggles and battles. I no longer had to put on a “business mask” and hide my true thoughts, opinions, and views on controversial-but-important subjects—including faith.

I considered my work not something that was being done to benefit me, but rather something I was doing to glorify God and serve others. That made all the difference. The attacks on both myself personally and on my business increased, but God was faithful. He protected both the business and my family while providing more than I could have possibly imagined. 

Rejecting this lie and living out your faith at work is going to look different for everyone, but one of the best ways we can demonstrate God’s love is simply by doing our very best and committing to excellence in our work for the glory of God no matter what that work may be. 

The authors used a quote from Martin Luther that I thought hit this point well. “The Christian shoemaker does his duty not by putting little crosses on the shoes, but by making good shoes, because God is interested in good craftsmanship.” 

Our society is desperately lacking people who care about their work and go the extra mile to strive for excellence. So much so that when you find someone who does their work well you can’t help but notice them. That’s your opportunity to share the Gospel.

Bad things happen when a society stops building and working for the glory of God and only does the bare minimum—if that—to get collect a paycheck. If you look around in your daily life you’ll find horrible service, child-like mistakes and errors, and foolish workers who are incompetent from blue-collar to white-collar jobs and everywhere in between. 

I stumble across total incompetence everywhere in our society daily—including from people, businesses, and “professionals” you’d never expect. As a business owner, I have to be on top of every detail to catch other people’s incompetence. It’s frustrating, but if I don’t do it my business will pay the price for someone else’s lack of care and attention to detail. 

As 1 Corinthians 10:31 tells us “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” This is what we must remember to overcome this lie. People will notice when you do your work well with a commitment to excellence for the glory of God. 

The Truth of this chapter is: “our faith and our work cannot be compartmentalized; we should faithfully serve Him and others in everything we do.” 

Amen to that.

The Gab Files: UK Govt Demands Gab Ban A User For "Hatred

 

Gab is going to begin publishing the purely censorship-based inbound requests that we receive from governments. These are the cases where for the most part European bodies like the Met and Europol send us transparently political takedown requests with no law enforcement purpose. Essentially they’re trying to silence a person that they’ve already thrown in prison or are about to. If they don’t want us to talk about these frivolous requests, they can stop sending them to us.

Today we received one such request from the UK government. 

They cited Public Order Act 1986 which says the following:

(1)A person who publishes or distributes written material which is threatening, abusive or insulting is guilty of an offence if—(a) he intends thereby to stir up racial hatred(b) having regard to all the circumstances racial hatred is likely to be stirred up thereby

They didn’t tell us who the person is who allegedly broke this dystopian nonsense law, they didn’t tell us whether the content which they convicted him of was found on our site, and they didn’t specify which posts, if any, actually violated UK law.

They simply told us that they imprisoned someone for expressing wrongthink online, that person had a Gab account and the UK government expected us to unperson this person from the Internet at their behest when no violation of our TOS was found.

Gab is an American company which operates its business in accordance with U.S. law. Gab has no business or operations in the United Kingdom of any kind, nor does it inquire as to, or log, the residence or criminal records of its users or readers.

Gab’s policy is to not remove material unless it violates Gab’s terms of service which was drafted in accordance with US law, in particular the First Amendment.

“Hate speech” or “offensive speech” as such is not illegal here and in fact benefits from unambiguous constitutional protection backed by a half-century of precedent.

Our response to the UK is the same as it is to Germany, France, China, and every other country who tries to remove lawful content from the American Internet: get bent.

Alasdair Macleod: Understanding Money

Talk given by Alasdair Macleod at a meeting of the Oxford Mises Society. Alasdair Macleod is Head of Research for Goldmoney (https://www.goldmoney.com/research). He has been a celebrated stockbroker and member of the London Stock Exchange for over four decades. His experience encompasses equity and bond markets, fund management, corporate finance and investment strategy. Alasdair Macleod started his career as a stockbroker in 1970 on the London Stock Exchange. Within nine years, he had risen to become senior partner of his firm. Subsequently, he held positions at director level in investment management and worked as a mutual fund manager. Mr Macleod also worked at a bank in Guernsey as an executive director. For most of his 40 years in the finance industry, he has been demystifying macro-economic events for his investing clients. The accumulation of this experience has convinced him that unsound monetary policies are the most destructive weapon governments use against the common man. Accordingly, his mission is to educate and inform the public in layman’s terms about what governments do with money and how to protect themselves from the consequences.
