Another astonishing Tucker Carlson interview

How America turned on its own people

by Kathy Gyngell  at the Conservative woman
TUCKER Carlson is one on his own. Never more so than since he set up his own media platform. Hot on the heels of his historic encounter with Vladimir Putin he has just conducted another groundbreaking interview, this time with a man no one has heard of,  Michael Benz, who worked at the US State Department in the Cyber Division.

Several people who contacted me about it over the weekend described it as one of the most disturbing and eye-opening interviews they have ever seen. I sat down to watch it myself. And yes, I think it may be the most important and detailed exposition I have come across to explain the West’s ‘oppositionless’ transformation from liberal democracy into autocracy – under our very eyes without a shot being fired and, not least, for the scale, the depth and the detail of the analysis. How Obama’s military censorship network led the 2019 impeachment of Trump is but one example of this transformation process. But who knew that, years before this, Google began as a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) grant? I didn’t. One such fact drops after another – information we all ought to be aware of, underlining how ill-informed we actually are.

The bottom line is that Benz provides the clearest evidence yet that Americans (and the rest of the West) are being censored and manipulated at the highest levels of government, specifically by the defence establishment’s exploitation of the internet and social media.

Because the interview is so dense and covers so much ground in an hour – the transcript runs to 10,000 words and none of them is  wasted – we have decided to publish it in segments over the next few days.

You can watch the whole interview here.

The Transcript, Part One

The story of internet freedom and its switch from internet freedom to internet censorship

(Tucker Carlson sets the stage, tells us who Mike Benz is and asks his first question.)

Tucker Carlson: The defining fact of the United States is freedom of speech. To the extent this country is actually exceptional, it’s because we have the First Amendment to the Bill of Rights. We have freedom of conscience. We can say what we really think. There’s no hate speech exception to that. Just because you hate what somebody else thinks, you cannot force that person to be quiet because we’re citizens, not slaves. But that right, that foundational right that makes this country what it is, that right from which all other rights flow, is going away at high speed in the face of censorship. Now, modern censorship bears no resemblance to previous censorship regimes in previous countries in previous eras. Our censorship is effected on the basis of fights against ‘disinformation’ and ‘malinformation’. And the key thing to know about these is they’re everywhere. And of course, they have no reference at all to whether what you’re saying is true or not. In other words, you can say something that is factually accurate and consistent with your own conscience, and in previous versions of America, had an absolute right to say those things. But because someone doesn’t like them, or because they’re inconvenient to whatever plan the people in power have, they can be denounced as ‘disinformation’, and you could be stripped of your right to express them, either in person or online. In fact, expressing these things can become a criminal act, and is. And it’s important to know, by the way, that this is not just the private sector doing this. These efforts are being directed by the US government, which you pay for and at least theoretically own. It’s your government, but they’re stripping your rights at very high speed. Most people understand this intuitively, but they don’t know how it happens. How does censorship happen? What are the mechanics of it?

Mike Benz is, we can say with some confidence, the expert in the world on how this happens. Mike Benz had the cyber portfolio at the State Department. He’s now executive director of Foundation for Freedom Online, and we’re going to have a conversation with him about a very specific kind of censorship. By the way, we can’t recommend strongly enough if you want to know how this happens, Mike Benz is the man to read. But today we just want to talk about a specific kind of censorship and that censorship that emanates from the fabled military industrial complex, from our defense industry, and the foreign policy establishment in Washington. That’s significant now because we’re on the cusp of a global war. And so you can expect censorship to increase dramatically.

And so with that, here is Mike Benz, executive director of Foundation for Freedom Online. Mike, thanks so much for joining us. And I just can’t overstate to your audience how exhaustive and comprehensive your knowledge is on this topic. It’s almost unbelievable. And so if you could just walk us through how the foreign policy establishment and defense contractors and DoD [US Department of Defense] and just the whole cluster, the constellation of defense-related, publicly funded institutions strip from us our freedom of speech?

Mike Benz: Sure. You know, one of the easiest ways to actually start the story is really with the story of internet freedom and its switch from internet freedom to internet censorship, because free speech on the internet was an instrument of statecraft almost from the outset of the privatization of the internet in 1991. We quickly discovered, through the efforts of the Defense Department, the State Department in our intelligence services, that people were using the internet to congregate on blogs and forums, and free speech was championed more than anybody by the Pentagon, the State Department, and our sort of CIA cut-out NGO blob architecture as a way to support dissident groups around the world, in order to help them overthrow authoritarian governments, as they were sort of billed.

Essentially the internet free speech allowed kind of instant regime change operations, to be able to facilitate the foreign policy establishment’s State Department agenda. Google is a great example of this. Google began as a DARPA grant by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were Stanford PhDs. And they got their funding as part of a joint CIA/NSA [US National Security Agency] program to chart how, quote, birds of a feather flock together online through search engine aggregation. And then one year later, they launched Google and then became a military contractor quickly thereafter. They got Google Maps by purchasing a CIA satellite software, essentially, and the ability to track to use free speech on the internet as a way to circumvent state control over media, over in places like Central Asia, or all around the world, was seen as a way to be able to do what used to be done out of CIA station houses or out of embassies or consulates in a way that was totally turbocharged.

And all of the internet free speech technology was initially created by our national security state. VPNs, virtual private networks to hide your IP address. Tour the dark web, to be able to buy and sell goods anonymously and to end encrypted chats. All these things were created initially as DARPA projects or as joint CIA/NSA projects, to be able to help intelligence-backed groups to overthrow governments that were causing a problem to the Clinton administration or the Bush administration or the Obama administration. And this plan worked magically from about 1991 until about 2014, when there began to be an about-face on internet freedom and its utility.

Now, the high watermark of the sort of internet free speech moment was the Arab Spring in 2011, 2012, when you had this one by one. All of the adversary governments of the Obama administration, Egypt, Tunisia, all began to be toppled in Facebook revolutions and Twitter revolutions. And you had the State Department working very closely with the social media companies to be able to keep social media online during those periods. There was a famous phone call from Google’s Jared Cohen to Twitter to not do their scheduled maintenance so that the preferred opposition group in Iran would be able to use Twitter, to win that election. So it was, free speech was an instrument of statecraft from the national security state to begin with. All of that architecture, all the NGOs, the relationships between the tech companies and the national security state had been long established for freedom.

In 2014, after the coup in Ukraine, there was an unexpected counter-coup where Crimea and the Donbas broke away and they broke away with essentially a military backstop that Nato was highly unprepared for at the time. They had one last Hail Mary chance, which was the Crimea annexation vote on, in 2014. And when the hearts and minds of the people of Crimea voted to join the Russian Federation, that was the last straw for the concept of free speech on the internet in the eyes of Nato as they saw it, the fundamental nature of war changed at that moment. And Nato at that point declared something that they first called the Gerasimov doctrine, which is named after this Russian military, a general, who they claimed made a speech that the fundamental nature of war has changed. You don’t need to win military skirmishes to take over Central and Eastern Europe. All you need to do is control the media and the social media ecosystem, because that’s what controls elections. And if you simply get the right administration into power, they control the military. So it’s infinitely cheaper than conducting a military war to simply conduct an organized political, influence operation over social media.

And legacy media and industry had been created that spanned the Pentagon, the British Ministry of Defense in Brussels [sic] into an organized political warfare outfit, essentially infrastructure that was created, initially stationed in Germany and in Central and Eastern Europe to create psychological buffer zones, basically to create the ability to have the military work with the social media companies, to censor Russian propaganda, or to censor domestic right-wing populist groups in Europe who were rising in political power at the time because of the migrant crisis. So you had the systematic targeting by our State Department, by our ISI [US Inter-Services Intelligence], by the Pentagon, of groups like Germany’s AfD, the Alternative fur Deutschland there, and for groups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.

Now, when Brexit happened in 2016, it was that was this crisis moment where suddenly they didn’t have to worry just about Central and Eastern Europe any more. It was coming westward, this idea of Russian control over hearts and minds. And so that was Brexit was June 2016. The very next month at the Warsaw Conference, Nato formally amended its charter to expressly commit to hybrid warfare as there as this new Nato capacity. So they went from, you know, basically 70 years of tanks to this explicit capacity building for censoring tweets if they were deemed to be Russian proxies. And again, it’s not just Russian propaganda.

This was these were now Brexit groups or groups like Matteo Salvini in Italy, or in Greece or in Germany or in Spain with the Vox party. And now at the time, Nato was publishing white papers saying that the biggest threat Nato faces is not actually a military invasion from Russia. It’s losing domestic elections across Europe in two. All these right-wing populist groups who, because they were mostly working-class movements, were campaigning on cheap Russian energy at a time when the US was pressuring this energy diversification policy. And so they made the argument after Brexit. Now the entire rules-based international order would collapse unless the military took control over media, because Brexit would give rise to ‘Frexit’ in France with Marine Le Pen. to ‘Spexit’ in Spain with a Vox party, to ‘Italexit’ in Italy, to ‘Grexit’ in Germany, to ‘Grexit’ in Greece, the EU would come apart, so Nato would be killed without a single bullet being, being fired. And then not only that, now that Nato is gone, now there’s no enforcement arm for the International Monetary Fund, the IMF, or the World Bank. So now the financial stakeholders who depend on the battering ram of the national security state would basically be helpless against governments around the world.

So from their perspective, if the military did not begin to censor the internet, every, all of the democratic institutions and infrastructure

MATT LE TISSIER - THE KALERGI PLAN

The ex-professional football player and football pundit, Matt le Tissier, in conversation with British Nationalist, Nick Cotton, in regards to mass immigration and the 'Kalergi Plan'.

As Matt himself says, this is not a conspiracy theory, you can see it happening in front of your very eyes and it's been well documented too so that the evidence for this is now irrefutable, unless you're one of these types who's still living in denial or you have a self-serving agenda to push.

Therefore, it's not, "Migration replacement", it's not, "The Great Replacement", it's the "Kalergi Plan", created and financed by the Jewish supremacist central bankers: 👉 link.gy/e2a15 (video)

David Irving, possibly the bravest British historian ever

David Irving, possibly the bravest British historian ever, has died, aged 85. Not a perfect man, but a remarkable one. He put the liberal court historians to shame.

After years of persecution by the Holocaust industry, he was asked "Mr Irving, are you anti-Semitic?" His instant reply: "Not yet".

The Wellingborough and Kingswood by-election six really important lessons for nationalists

The Wellingborough and Kingswood by-election results contain six really important lessons for nationalists. Veteran British nationalist Nick Griffin gives us an in-depth analysis of the result saw two Labour landslides:

1. The Illusion of Choice. Despite everything, the System's "lesser of 2 evils" trick still works. The public are angry and worried about problems the governing Tory/Labour duopoly created, but still flip between them like a dying fish. The Labour party is utterly toxic in so many ways, but the Tories are hated even more, so the voting sheeple switch from blue to red. The next flip will see Labour take power with a huge majority, but within two years of that the Tories will be winning by-elections with swamping swings of their own.

2. Fifty Years of Futile Protest Votes. Despite all the GBNews support and big money, and the fact that immigration issues are far worse now, Reform's 13% in Wellingborough and 10% in Kingswood were still well short of the 16.4% which the British National Party took in Oldham West in 2001 - and that result came in a General Election, in which insurgent parties always struggle.

By-elections are much easier places to make a breakthrough, as the National Front found in 1973, when Martin Webster took 13% in West Bromwich West. More than fifty years on, and the anti-immigration vote available for well-funded and well-run campaigns in by-elections is still stuck at 13% of the voters, which is about 5% of the entire electorate. God help us, because electioneering certainly won't!

3. Safety Valves and Shekels. That said, Reform is now firmly established as THE 'far-right' safety valve. It enjoys the backing of the Brexiteers' hero Nigel Farage, a gaggle of multi-millionaires and a rapidly growing mainstream TV news channel. The idea that any harder right party can overcome this already well-established stumbling block is either childish self-deception or a grifting lie.

Wellingborough further proved this point, since Britain First actually ran quite a professional, expensive and energetic campaign (much more sophisticated, for example, than the vast majority of campaigns run by the NF in its heyday). They also had the endorsement of Tommy Robinson, who put out emails and social media posts from his luxury property in Spain urging supporters to vote from Britain First rather than Reform.

With just under 2%, the Britain First vote was only about an eighth of Reform's total, but BF leader Paul Golding does very well out of their fund-raising appeals at each election so he will keep on standing, and thus 'splitting the nationalist vote', for the foreseeable future. For 'electoral-roaders' to wish this problem away by talking about future electoral pacts is to completely miss the point. BF don't stand in elections to win them, or even in the hope of building the party, but because it's a nice little earner.

Lest anyone believe, that Reform itself will bring real change, remember that they too face the insurmountable hurdle of the first-past-the-post. flipping fish system. And that despite noises about immigration reform, net zero and 'family values', they support 'the right sort of immigration', British involvement in foreign wars, the fiat currency banking swindle, free trade economic suicide, gay rights and all the rest of the liberal atheist poison which dragged the West down in the first place. Reform is a safety valve for the System, not a solution to the System.

4. Reform Stumbling Block. Despite not making a real breakthrough, Reform took enough Conservative votes to cost the Tories their seat in Wellingborough. There is therefore now a very strong prospect that the liberal-left BBC, Sky News and ITV will start pumping up Reform. They did the same, you should remember, for Farage and UKIP for around ten years, in order to provide the safety valve necessary to stop the British National Party. Having learnt the trick, they will play it again, boosting Reform in order to split the Tory vote in the next General Election and give Keir Starmer's Labour Lite the massive majority needed to continue the replacement immigration policy and reverse Brexit.

So Britain now has a highly-recognised, well-funded, civic nationalist party which is going to enjoy kid-glove treatment from the three old big broadcasters and the fulsome support of the new one. The claim that any of the gaggle of 'real' nationalist parties already in existence, or being built as castles-in-the-clouds in the 'brains' of their would-be leaders, can somehow overcome this hurdle would be laughable - if it wasn't helping to waste even more time, energy and money which could be put to constructive use if the leaders of these sick joke 'organisations' weren't self-obsessed crackpots.

5. No Change in Sight. All this means that the political class will remain in charge right through their converging catastrophes of mass immigration, disastrous war, financial collapse, social and moral disintegration, and carbon-reduction energy and food production suicide. This Godless system is not going to be saved, and the political puppets who officially run it are not going to be ousted, by the public 'waking up' and voting them out.

This is not a black pill. There is still a future, but that future will be built by the survivors of their self-inflicted civilisational collapse, not by a bunch of white knights miraculously winning power through the ballot box and stopping and reversing it.

6. There is a White Pill. Let us now turn to the bright side. The massive non-turnout shows there are many millions of Brits who have already given up on elections. In both seats yesterday, nearly two-thirds of the electorate registered either their loathing for all politicians or their terminal stupidity by not voting at all. Nothing, and especially not a new minnow party - even if it was led by a heroic and perfect Mosley/Gandhi/Churchill/Powell hybrid - will restore their trust in politicians.

THIS is the huge space in which nationalists and militant Christians can and must work, creating structures which will help more of our people get through the long dark night of the coming collapse. And/or a vanguard with at least a fighting chance of picking power out of the ruins of a System which is throwing away its own legitimacy and ability to maintain authority.

The popular rage and resistance to the global elite puppet regimes which we see building - from Ireland to Poland, from Greece to the USA - COULD open the way to revolutionary change. But only if nationalists understand that revolutionary change will come not from throwing away scarce resources and wasting time in unwinnable elections, but from preparing for something far more like the sudden paradigm shifts of the Ulster Workers Council strike of 1974, Berlin and Bucharest in 1989, or the Kiev Maidan of 2014.

Note that (whether for good or ill) ALL those sudden overthrows of unpopular regimes came from extra-parliamentary action by huge numbers of ordinary people, led by small numbers of activists/agitators/organisers. And the even better news is that all these came not from the left, but the right.

The same is true of the three recent missed opportunities for revolutionary change in the English-speaking world: The Hauliers' and Farmers' fuel blockade, which could have brought down the Blair government back in 2000; the January 6th 2021 protest in the USA, which was not - but should have been - an armed insurrection against a totally illegitimate System coup, and the Truckers' Convoy protest against Trudeau's plandemic tyranny in Canada in 2022.

The case of the Solidarity protests in Poland, which marked the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union, is more complex, since the  nationalist and Catholic elements were joined in the struggle by CIA-funded liberals and Trotskyites. The victory of 1988/89 didn't come from nowhere, but followed directly from the earlier Gdansk protests which were crushed in 1970 and 1980. It was third time lucky for the anti-Communist Poles, but only because the would-be revolutionaries learned from their mistakes and didn't fight the authorities on their own terms. They picked their ground and won.

The lesson leaps off the pages of very recent history time and time again: Tyrannies are not overthrown through the electoral systems which they control and manipulate to legitimise their rule; they fall when masses of people mobilise, then win over or brush aside the security forces, and send the former rulers into retirement, exile or death.

Anyone still pretending otherwise, and either offering or implying future electoral victory, is either a delusional fool or a grifting crook. You can choose which, but you can't chose electoral salvation. There is no parliamentary road, but there is much to do to prepare the real way ahead.

Obedience to Tyrannical Authorities a Reevaluating for the Christian

Romans 13: Reevaluating Obedience to Tyrannical Authorities

By The Duke of Good

It has come to my attention that many people believe we should follow authority, regardless of what we’re being ordered to do. To make matters worse, there is a huge problem with our justice system today. I see a few different camps of people in this group. There’s those that blindly follow, and these followers will sometimes go as far as to get hostile toward anyone questioning their belief. Then there are those that ‘go along to get along’, and say they just don’t want to ‘make waves’, despite having some idea that what they’re doing is unnecessary or even flat out wrong. Finally there are some that simply comply out of fear – fear of man that is, not God – usually concerned with losing their job. Matthew 6:26 says, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”.

Oh ye of little faith.

When pressed for their reasoning, it’s very common for blind followers of authority to bring up the Bible, and most often it is the book of Romans. Romans 13 is often taken out of context when it’s used to support unquestioning obedience to governing authorities or to justify submission to unjust laws. This passage is taken from the New Testament book of Romans, specifically chapter 13, verses 1-7. Here is the passage:

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.”

This passage is often used as to argue that Christians should always obey the government, no matter what. However, this interpretation overlooks several important factors.

First, it’s crucial to consider the historical context. The book of Romans was written by the Apostle Paul in the mid-to-late 50s AD, during the reign of the Roman Empire, which was notoriously oppressive to Christians. Paul’s audience was primarily composed of early Christians who were facing persecution. Therefore, when Paul urges Christians to be subject to the governing authorities, he is likely trying to protect them from harm.

Secondly, the passage needs to be interpreted in light of the overall message of the Bible. The Bible also contains many examples of people defying government authority for the sake of justice, such as the prophets of the Old Testament or the apostles in the New Testament. In these cases, disobedience to the government was justified because it was in accordance with God’s will.

Lastly, it’s essential to remember that all human authorities are fallible and can make mistakes. Christians should always obey the law, except when it conflicts with God’s higher law. In such cases, it’s the duty of Christians to resist and stand up for what is right.

Now that we have a clearer understanding of the correct interpretation, it’s clear that the church has been negligent. We as Christians are called to boldly speak the truth, and just look at what happens to those that do these days. James O’Keefe comes to mind. Certain politicians, doctors, judges, lawyers…it is pervasive, even across social and cultural boundaries. So many of us are being persecuted simply for speaking truth.

In today’s America, there is hardly anyone inside or outside the church willing to stand up and speak truth to the powers that be. It is for this reason that the church MUST. The church is the last resort. If not us, who? If not now, when? Every day that goes by, more babies are sacrificed. More governors roll out unconstitutional ‘mandates’ or ‘executive orders’. These aren’t even laws and we are not pushing back?

Before anyone comments, check the legal definition of the word ‘mandate’. I should also preface the following by saying I am not a legal expert and make no claim that the following is accurate in a court of law. But that in no way means what I’m about to say is incorrect either.

From the definition, three things are necessary to create a mandate. First, that there should exist something which should be the matter of the contract; secondly, that it should be done gratuitously; and thirdly, that the parties should voluntarily intend to enter into the contract. So if a person disagrees with a mandate, there is no mandate, by the legal definition.

Governors and other elected officials also enjoy rolling out tyranny via Executive Orders (EO), which in recent years have been used to circumvent the process of making a law. An EO is also NOT a law – as soon as it it challenged in a non-kangaroo court, it will be struck down. EO’s were created for rare moments where some emergency needed addressing quickly and there was no time to pass the proper laws. Bottom line is, EO’s that go against God’s laws are null & void.

Benjamin Franklin famously suggested using the following motto to be used for the Seal of the United States of America.

“Disobedience to tyrants is obedience to God”. ~ Benjamin Franklin

When the governing authority ceases to do good, they cease to be an authority. He didn’t make this up. He got this from the early church fathers, e.g. St. Thomas Aquanis.

“Human law is law only by virtue of its accordance with right reason; and thus it is manifest that it flows from the eternal law. And in so far as it deviates from right reason it is called an unjust law; in such case it is no law at all, but rather a species of violence.” ~ St. Thomas Aquinas

Or to put it simply, “Unjust law is no law at all”

And we cannot have a complete opinion here without a quote from my personal favorite author, Mr. Thoreau.

“There will never be a really free and enlightened state until the state comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power, from which all its own power and authority are derived.” ~ Henry David Thoreau, Civil Disobedience

Paul tells us that all authority is given by God. He’s not suggesting that all tyranny or all anarchy are given by God, as these are in direct and indirect defiance of God. When a ruler is a legitimate ruler, we’re instructed to obey; however, when the ruler commands what is illegitimate, according to the eternal law, we must respond the same way the apostles did, we must obey God, rather than man.

We are endowed by our Creator certain inalienable rights, with the primary being life! Liberty is precious, but you cannot have liberty or happiness if you’re dead! If alive, one can pursue liberty, and if successful, one can finally pursue happiness. This is why the first right, life, is under such an unprecedented attack, and liberty is a close second.

As bad as things may seem these days, it’s good to remember that tyranny and evil are quite powerless in the long run. All they have is lies and they quickly fall apart under scrutiny. What did Mahatma Gandhi say about evil?

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it – always.”

So I hope this article reminds us all that we, United States citizens, hold the ultimate power, given to us by God and protected by the constitution and our [Godly] elected officials. Next time the health department rolls into our small towns trying to close businesses, or send state police to threaten our attending church, etc. remember these people quoted above, especially God’s word, and push back. Hard! Because this is a spiritual battle we’re fighting and going along with tyranny makes one just as guilty as the tyrants. Even a dead fish can float along in the current, and I do not believe God would have us floating belly up. Tyrants cannot commit tyranny without citizens complying, which makes what happens as much our own fault for being complicit.

We deserve what we tolerate.

In summary, Romans 13 is often taken out of context when it’s used to argue for unquestioning obedience to governing authorities. It’s crucial to consider the historical context, the overall message of the Bible, and the fallibility of human authorities when interpreting this passage. Christians should obey the law, but they should also be prepared to resist when it conflicts with God’s higher law.

I leave you with a link to a documentary, Letter to the American Church, which just recently was turned into a movie by the same name, a must watch for anyone that made it this far.

They’re lying about Alexei Navalny “Putin’s Enemy”

Another thing we've lost by Nick Griffin

 Another thing we've lost in low-trust, multi-cult, pervert-ridden Britain.

In the 1970s, we young Brits hitch-hiked everywhere. From the age of 15 I hitched thousands of miles every year, as did nearly all my school and university friends. Even when we got our own cars we still often hitched, because it was free and usually almost the same speed. You met all sorts of interesting and often very kind people. From lorry drivers who broke their solitary boredom by giving lifts, to elderly folk whose own grandchildren hitched. None of us ever encountered muggers, psychopaths, predatory perverts or drug-drivers - though I did once endure a terrifying late evening drive with a drunken Pole. It was fun, mind-broadening and both reflected and helped build a genuinely sense of common nationality. Many younger people don't even know about it, and certainly none of them do it. Though I'd still stop for any teen with thumb out, looking like we did. The past is indeed a foreign country.
