On Christian Femininity

On Christian Femininity

by Robyn Riley

No path is as fraught with as much deception, trickery, and artifice in modern times as that of the path to womanhood. From all angles and the early stages of childhood, women are ambushed with ideas about the best way to be who they are and more importantly what they are not. Messages of how they should think about femininity, sexuality, love, marriage, motherhood, spirituality, and vocation are all dominated by secular voices most often coming from pop feminism.

Women scoff at the thought of seeking biblical wisdom or God’s guidance in their journey to adulthood and yet still wonder why they are so miserable. Modern women are never satiated in their continuous pleasure-seeking and are usually left feeling empty inside though surrounded by material wealth.

The issues facing secular womanhood.

Humility is a seldom considered virtue in modern times, even less so by secular women. Everything in our culture directs women towards a cult of pride, materialism, and vanity. Narcissistic tendencies are celebrated in “Girl Boss” culture and are encouraged over self-sacrifice and charity. Social media exacerbates this fact by encouraging women to feel that the greatest thing they have to offer to others is merely images of themselves, filtered and edited to perfection.

The normalization of female sexuality has been seen as a currency that has encouraged women to sell their bodies online as soon as they’re legally permitted to do so. They offer debased digital fragments of themselves to thousands of anonymous men for a living rather than devoting their lives to one man of honor, and they are applauded for doing so. Indeed women receive more attention, validation, and in some cases more wealth this way but it is all fleeting. Dreams and success are therefore built upon sand.

Feminism reigns supreme in the secular world and elicits another form of pride pertaining to women’s ability to live and even become mothers independently from men. At great cost to individual women who attempt it, the infrastructure exists to support such a delusion. It can be artificially achieved through working a minimum of 40 hours a week, paying for a sperm donor, IVF, a nanny, and daycare. Those who would rather the focus be perpetually themselves can simply “rescue” a cat or dog.

Sobriety of mind is one of the most important factors of living a spiritual life. Yet many women are sucked into the new age religion of self-worship where many are regularly engaging in ritual veneration of pagan and Hindu deities in the form of yoga and live under the constant influence of marijuana. Ironically we see a lot of these specific forms of delusion popping up in holistic health communities.

This culture inevitably results in the suffering of many women because even though on the surface we can make it appear as if they are living happy fulfilled lives, most have absolutely no purpose beyond their own pleasure-seeking and suffering avoidance. More women than ever rely on SSRIs to cope with crippling mental illness, no doubt at least in part from lifestyle choices and toxic beliefs they harbor within.

Rather than address the cause and root of this crisis among women, we see intense efforts to simply normalize despair, to dress up pain in comedy and quirky self-deprecation. Women have been made into clowns and caricatures of themselves, embracing their failure as some kind of trophy. Personalities such as Lena Dunham and Amy Schumer and their work reaffirm this new archetype rooted in failed, or rejection of, traditional femininity. It has become the all too common model for a new kind of vileness in women’s shameless displaying of non-compliance with natural womanhood.

What is Biblical/Orthodox Christian womanhood?

I hesitate to dictate too firmly from my own perspective on what it means to be a good Christian woman. I fail at being so every day, I am after all human, broken and flawed before God’s eyes. I have been a Christian all my life, but only Orthodox for about a year. I am an infant in my understanding and practical implementation of what it means to embody right Christian womanhood and I encourage you to approach any woman who speaks with a sense of authority on the matter with extreme caution.

While my own personal experience is lacking, as I still have so much to learn and unlearn in my own journey of walking with God as an Orthodox wife and mother, scripture is clear about what God intended womanhood to be.

Motherhood as a form of Asceticism

Embracing motherhood with a joyful heart is one of the most challenging and transformative things a woman can do. As mothers, every moment of every day is considered in relation to our children. We are no longer individuals, there is an extension of our hearts and selves out in the world and under our care. We sacrifice sleep, spare time, our hobbies, often even the food on our plates for our little ones. It is a constant practice in subverting our own will for the good of another person.

There are a lot of toxic beliefs and coping mechanisms floating around modern mom culture. From making excuses about being lazy with housework, putting no effort into cooking nutritious meals for our children, the normalization of alcoholism, and even making social media posts expressing how you are still a good mom even if you have a kind of disdain and resentment towards your children. I suspect this is mostly because this community never considers that it is God that they can rely on to help them through the often tedious and trying aspects of motherhood.

“God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.”

Psalm 46:5

I’m not saying that motherhood will be easy if you rely on God, it’s going to be hard regardless. What I am saying is that with God by our side even the most difficult days can be accented with gratitude, love, and patience. God doesn’t give burdens and challenges in our lives as a form of punishment. These are opportunities to turn towards God himself for help rather than worldly comforts. God will always be here for us when we need him. Motherhood is a pathway to realizing and experiencing this on a daily basis.

In the same way that a monk or nun denies themselves for their own salvation and in their charity the salvation of others, Christian mothers also deprive themselves of much and still find great meaning and joy in the process along the way. In this way, a Christian approach to motherhood can be seen as a form of asceticism, and among the highest callings a woman can answer.

Icon of the Mother of God the “Milkgiver”

Serving one’s family and/or community as a vocation.

Christian women are often seen as having to be mothers in order to be embodying womanhood correctly, but this is not always the case. Many Christian saints lived chaste lives and still were more than adequate representations of Orthodox womanhood.

“She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.”

Proverbs 31:20-21

Christian women must be willing to be charitable to those in her community and life who are in need. They must do such works for the well-being and salvation of others without expecting anything in return. Charity for the sole purpose of getting oneself in God’s good books makes charitable works ultimately self-serving. God gave women a nurturing and life-giving nature that can be fully expressed through acts of charity to both the stranger as well as to one’s family.

Furthermore one of the most contentious aspects of the service of Christian womanhood pertains to the service to one’s husband. We know that Eve was created as Adam’s helper. This has been taken out of context to mean that Eve was Adam’s slave or indentured servant. On the contrary is it the complementary roles played by both sexes in cooperation with one another which allows for both men and women to fulfill their natural God-given roles adequately.

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.”

Ephesians 5:22-33

It is of the utmost importance that women see their husbands as instruments of their salvation and vice versa. God gave us the sacrament of marriage as a gift that allows us to attain eternal life through service to and love of another person. Both husband and wife have their duties to one another and there is great honor in fulfilling them.

In practical terms when we try to serve our husbands we must consider that different kinds of husbands will need different things to feel loved and supported. Some husbands fully appreciate having a hot meal prepared for them consistently when they get home from work, others simply need to hear words of encouragement and appreciation regularly and some men really just need time alone to feel that they are being supported.

Rather than making demands of our husbands, why not entrust him with tasks that better help him lead the family? As women, we can sometimes feel that we know the best way to do things and it can be very difficult to trust in our husbands to not only do things their way but to do them correctly.

When we build that trust in our husbands by letting go of the need to control family matters we offer our husbands the opportunity to grow in their Christian role as family leaders. In so doing we grow in humility and our trust in God’s will for us.

St. Gorgonia: declared by her brother, St. Gregory the Theologian, to be, “The Paragon of Women” and “The Diamond of Her Sex”

Seeking and Glorifying God through all things.

One of the most challenging things about pursuing Christian womanhood in today’s world is practicing humility and learning to be grateful for all things the Lord has offered and withheld from us. Women are taught to have an enormous sense of entitlement from very early on in their lives. Women have incredibly high standards and expectations of the world around them and generally believe they should receive all the comforts and luxuries life has to offer merely for existing. This ensures a kind of extended adolescence and perpetual postponing of emotional maturation resulting in women never really knowing how to accept denial or being told no.

Christian womanhood takes the exact opposite approach to navigating life’s triumphs and disappointments. We must be careful to not let success go to our head, nor let failure create a sense of self-pity. When God gives, and withholds, the things we desire greatly in our hearts we must be willing to accept these things with the response of gratitude and humility always.

Subverting our own will for the will of our Creator is a constant practice. If God sees it right to withhold something from us, trust that it is good. If he gives, thank him sincerely. This doesn’t mean that we ought to carry out our lives with indifference and lack of direction, it means that we should work towards what we want with a constant surrender to God’s plan over our own. Being able to do this subverts the often neurotic and depressive tendencies women can indulge in at times. It allows us to express great emotions with dignity and feminine grace.

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time”

1 Peter 5:6

Our endlessly vain and narcissistic beauty culture on social media distracts many women from the feminine beauty within ourselves. We can easily become too focused on outward beauty due to the reality that merely being physically beautiful can afford women a great deal of wealth and luxury. While it is not a sin to take care of one’s appearance and to enjoy looking good we must be careful that we do not let our fixation with our appearance distracts us from God.

We must work at least as hard adorning our spirits with qualities that are pleasing to God as we do with adorning our physical bodies. A kind heart and a gentle spirit are more beautiful in the eyes of God than any physical quality.

“Do not let your adorning be external — the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear — but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”

1 Peter 3:3-4

Wisdom from my Matushka

The cultural pressure to prove that you are more than “just a woman” is pervasive in our culture thanks to feminism. Women are pressured to be career-driven, financially independent, fashionable, worldly, highly educated, etc. Women have been told from a very young age that the “patriarchy” prevents them from doing what men can do. They then spend their whole lives trying to prove that they can do what men can do, sacrificing many aspects of womanhood they deeply long for in the process. As my Matushka once said, “Just be women!” We were designed to be nurturers and mothers and that’s enough! Our roles as a strong, grounding, organizing, and solidifying force for the family and community are essential for the health of children and wider society.

Orthodox women don’t feel a need to perform or prove that they are something more than they are. They celebrate and embrace who God made them to be. My Matushka taught me that Orthodox women are wholly, authentically themselves and they do not apologize for it. We know we are powerful, necessary, and strong in the roles and responsibilities God has given us and that our blossoming can best be achieved there. This doesn’t mean that we can’t change a lightbulb or do hard work, on the contrary, it means that we do hard work as women. We are comfortable in our own skin. We are happy and grateful to be women and do our work the way only women can.

Christ took on human form and suffered human death for us, it is important then, that Christian women constantly be asking themselves, “What are we taking on for Christ?” Is it the challenges of raising Christian children who love God also? Is it supporting the husbands, fathers, and brothers God has given to us? Is it service to one’s community and disciplined obedience to God’s word? However we as unique and individual women are destined to fulfill God’s will, we must carry our cross with love, humility, and gratitude just as He did for us.

F.O.C.U.S. – PART 1

F.O.C.U.S. – PART 1

Look away from FEAR, past your OBSTACLES. Walk with CHRIST, in UNITY with others, and make a road that allows you to thrive in the SECURITY that demonstrates your hope is secure.

by Nathan & Kim Lawson

In our last article, we laid out examples and methods for stepping out into an alternative lifestyle, a variety of a parallel Christian society. These were tools that we used to successfully blaze a trail that is only beginning to be paved. We cannot be sure about you as the reader, but we were so content with mainstream American consumerism that we did not have the clarity to see that we only seemed to be fulfilled. Despite a myriad list of life struggles within this lifestyle, there was still this security that we now believe is lost to a growing number of us. This is the highs of our great culture and Western society, those that supported our empty pursuit of happiness. This is no longer the case, with a major factor being our head-first dive into ever more reliance on Big-Tech structures at the turn of the century.

We now stand with the old path pulled up from in front of our faces, barely able to comprehend this new reality. We know that we all feel this way and that the only way forward is to build a new road! One that has not been provided to us by previous generations. We need a new way that reminds us of something more traditional, one that is not dependent on the perverse modern machinations. We are in front of a new frontier map, one that has been charted by the hand of God! That surely sounds exciting and terrifying but we feel that after two years of turmoil and chaos, the time to act is now. After all,if God is for us, who can be against us?” To stay ahead of the curve, and without corruption from the enemy, that old liar who will try to make this road in his image, we need to FOCUS.

Please indulge us for an initial example of the word “focus”. We once had a greyhound named “Budget”. Despite being a rescue from the tracks, our opinion was that he was by far the best dog ever. If you know anything about greyhounds, you know they had a strict upbringing and only allowed precise diets, exercise, and training. When we first adopted him, we were given warnings and instructions that he will not “act” like a dog, at least not at the beginning. We would have to train him on some basic concepts, such as going up and down a staircase and adapting to walking on hard surfaces. The bottom of his feet had barely touched anything harder than soft dirt his entire life. We needed to understand that no matter how long we own him, his previous conditioning would not change. He had been built for one purpose: to race.

In many ways, I could also state that he was the best cat ever. As large of a dog as he was, he would sleep ninety percent of the day. He would ask to go out, race around the backyard for 1-2 laps, do his business, only to return to his pillow sleep. After a time of acclimation with one another, we were amazed at how easy he was to train and shocked at how true it was that his training never went away. There were many times we were amused by him as it appeared he would become tripped up over the smallest concepts. To us, it appeared he was just a dumb dog and it made his personality seem lovingly dopey. As we were discussing this with a veterinarian one day, we were jokingly telling some stories of how he amused us. At the end of the stories, we said, “He can sometimes just be so dumb!” The veterinarian turned to us and said, “Not dumb… just, focused.”

We walked away from that conversation even more amused because of how true the statement seemed and just how silly that sounded to us. We had a “focused” dog. To this day, the idea makes us chuckle. But it could not have been more true. Budget had been trained so well that his entire life was devoid of so many little details we thought to be necessary. But for him, his life was concentrated. The entire outside world laughed at him because of how he acted, how he was different. But in his world, everything lined up to one purpose – to race to the end!

It’s so bizarre to think on it now, but we envied the simple resolve of that dog. He taught us a lot about the fixation on a goal. He knew little of FEAR, rarely became distracted with OBSTACLES, and walked with unrelenting confidence in those in charge of his life. After the tracks, he did struggle to be in UNITY with other animals, but we believed he thrived in the SECURITY we gave him to live a comfortable life. Let’s look at each of those statements as instructions for a new road and see if we can pave out some truths towards developing our path toward a better life.

STEP 1: Look away from FEAR

When it comes to laying the first bricks on your path, the view in front of you will most assuredly be the mountain of fears awaiting you. These are some of the worst ones that we had: What if Christianity is made illegal? What if they take my children away from us? What if we lose our job, our house? How will we survive?

These are just a few examples that paralyze many individuals. Whatever fears that cause you to freeze up have been crafted to inhibit you from moving forward. Satan has one purpose, and that is to devour you! You can make his job much easier by simply choosing to listen to the fears ahead of you and never stepping forward. It does take courage, boldness, and resiliency that must be unwavering. This is because what is at stake now is more important than giving these fears a home in your life. For far too long we have gazed upon the things that are temporary and must now focus on what God has in store for us. Now is the time to be released from them along with all of the emotions that come with their presence. For we have had the opportunity more than once to see God act in such a time. In 2018, we were living in Northern Texas, over 1,300 miles away from anything we knew to be “normal”.

Texas is a different type of “Southern” than we were used to. As “children of the South”, our lives were launched into an unknown land when we moved to Cowboy Country. This was surprising as we did not anticipate working through culture shock even though we were still in America! This had such a dramatic effect on us, that only 5 months after our move to Texas, we found ourselves moving back east. We quickly realized and humbly accepted we were not made for Texas! It’s not that we didn’t try, we embraced life in the vast land of cattle, horses, and cacti. We wore Cowboy hats and boots and even came to enjoy the lifestyle.

But circumstances dictated this land was not our home. Finding ourselves alone on the edge of where desert climate begins, Nathan had to drive almost two hours into the Dallas-Ft. Worth area each night to Uber passengers around the area while Kim spent each early morning teaching remotely. We were strangers in a strange land, and it was at that moment God decided it was time to bless us – which frightened us even more! We discovered that our youngest daughter Felicity was on her way, and we knew something had to change. We no longer could wait for an opportunity to arise. The previous year, Kim had been diagnosed with a slipped disc in her back. Our local doctor told us this would be a hard 9 months as the baby develops. It would be wise to be in a “comfortable” area where others could help when she was expected to become bedridden.

Night after night, Nathan drove around knocking on his car door asking God to open another one. His knuckles would sometimes become sore and red from the constant motion all through the night. The degree of desperation meant he would take that old verse literally and continue to knock. It was an odd situation because an answer came in a kind of “Abram” way. Late one hot summer July night, a strong desire came over Nathan. We knew we had to do something, but in the past, God had always shown us the path we were to walk. This time, it was clear that “Just Go” was the call. Nathan came home and told Kim, “I believe God is calling us to move. I’m not sure what that means, but I think we need to begin packing.” Unknown to Nathan, Kim had been praying and God had told her to pray for Nathan to “be a warrior and to make a move”. So, when Nathan told her how God was moving in his life, her only response was, “Let’s go.”

Within the next two weeks, Nathan took a trip to North Carolina, secured a rental home, and the family moved out of Texas. We had no prospects – only our virtual jobs, and no plans; just ambition and a whole mess of fear in front of us! Our thought process was that we could chauffeur or e-teach anywhere, only needing a car and wifi. But more importantly – we had GOD. For two months Nathan sought jobs in the new area until the opportunity revealed itself and it brought this chapter in our lives to a close. If we had never looked away from our fears, we would never have allowed God to move us. To this day it seemed like that season of our life was a dream, or nightmare, depending on how you look at it. But one thing was true – we had nothing but God at that moment. We had to hold onto Him as the world lost all sense of right and wrong.

STEP 2: Look past your OBSTACLES

During this season of moving, there were a million things in our way, and exactly 1,300 miles! But we were taught a short saying years ago, “Focus on the objective, not the obstacle.” We lived in a house too small for a growing family, located in a small area that was quickly turning into a ghost town. We barely saw one another because Nathan worked nights and Kim worked early mornings. As Nathan would come home from a shift, he would fall asleep just as Kim was waking up to teach. A true “ships passing in the night” scenario. In the late afternoon, the entire family had about two hours together before Nathan left again and could not be around for bedtime routines. Later it was discovered the kids were hit hard by this schedule with many nights having them cry softly in their beds while falling asleep. It was difficult not to be angry at God during that time because we felt Nathan was forced to walk away from the job that brought us to Texas to stay with the family. These are just a few of the concerns and problems that were directly in front of us daily. Yet, once the call to leave came in, every obstacle had to be placed to the side.

God’s plan for us did not include much foresight, we just had to trust Him in the moment. The present circumstances, whatever they were, had to be set aside. To move past the fears, you must concentrate on the objective, even when it might seem to be the craziest opportunity in front of you. I know it sounds contrary to the world, but God’s way is not man’s way and He is under no obligation to give us any opportunities – at all. But many times, God will give us more than we can handle. He does this because He wants to be a part of our lives! If we could handle every situation, why would we ever need Him?

The obstacles seem impossible to move because it takes the strength of God to move them! What he requires from us – He calls us to engage with Him on a specific path. To do that, we must lay these bricks without fear and with our sight fixed on Him. He has promised He will reveal His Plan in due time and it will be far better than anything you or I could imagine. Have you found yourself in a position where you are surrounded by obstacles and fears? Maybe this is your time, your opportunity, to build a new path. What circumstances have you found yourself in that are forcing you to make changes? We would love to hear your story. Follow along with us @gijoeguy and tell us!

In our next article, we will go through PART 2 of F.O.C.U.S. – where we look at three practical steps on building a new path:

STEP 3: Walking with Christ

STEP 4: Be in UNITY with others

STEP 5: Thrive in His SECURITY

Chapter House Bathroom Completed

The completion of the bathroom means that – with the exception of one final coat of varnish on the panelling in the two main rooms - the work on our Chapter House is now all done. All the work is to the very highest standard, and we once again extend our thanks to all the donors who have so generously supported this very important project.

With this side of the work finished, we are now moving straight on to the restoration of the little chapel building next door to the Chapter House.

Dopey Joe and Boozy Boris Pushing for Insane War

With US and British ‘intelligence’ agencies issuing more and more ‘WMD’-style war propaganda, even the Ukrainians are pushing back against the insane liberal globalist attempt to provoke Russia into conflict.
Joe Biden has just refused to fly to an emergency meeting in Ukraine, despite President Volodymyr's Zelensky urgently requesting the US president to visit. Last week, the Ukrainians complained that the hysterical Nato ‘warnings’ of an imminent invasion are unfounded and provocative.
True to form, Boris Johnson seems to be doing his best to inflame the far-off crisis, in order to detract public attention from his ‘partygate’ woes and a possible leadership challenge at home. Whether Dopey Joe even knows where and what Ukraine is, is another question entirely!
If you do wake up later this week and find that we’re at war, you’ll know exactly who to blame!

Parents Win Judicial Review Opportunity

A couple on the Isle of Wight are now homeschooling their two sons after primary school staff on the Isle of Wight warned then that their six-year-old’s questioning another boy over wearing a dress made him 'transphobic'.

Sally and Nigel Rowe, whose sons attended a Church of England school, say they received a letter from the head teacher and chair of governors which declared pupils could be seen as transphobic if they showed 'an inability to believe a transgender person is actually a ''real'' female or male.'

The letter also added that refusing to use a transgender pupil's adopted name or gender appropriate pronouns would be considered 'transphobic behaviour'.

The Rowes pulled their children out of school in 2016 and 2017 after one of their sons came home confused that a boy in his class had begun inconsistently wearing a dress and identifying as a girl. The case is back in the news because the couple have been granted permission for a judicial review. A hearing will take place later this year

Mr Rowe says: 'This is not just about boys wearing dresses. This case is about an ideology that is now embedded in schools, local authorities, and Church of England leadership, and is causing serious long-term harm to thousands of children.

'We believe it is wrong to encourage very young children to embrace transgenderism. Boys are boys and girls are girls. Gender dysphoria is something we as Christians need to address with love and compassion, but not in the sphere of a primary school environment.

'We took this action with heavy hearts, but having seen how this issue has escalated, we feel vindicated and believe the government must be challenged’.

Templar Store Working Well

The online Templar Store is now fully functional and proving very popular. The very significant upgrade to this operation was made necessary by a serious of liberal Big Tech ‘deplatforming’ attacks on our earlier merchandising operation. Now that we are fully independent, the shop is much more stable.

The current best-selling item is Pilgrims of the Sword - the Official History of the Knights Templar. This is already down to the last 450 copies so, while we will of course be doing a reprint, if you’ve not already bot a copy, you should move quickly to be sure of getting a first edition.

The Goals of Secular Re-education and the Heart of Man

The Goals of Secular Re-education and the Heart of Man

My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways” (Prov. 23:25/26)1

The secular world seeks to dull and desensitize the heart. It fears living hearts, full of grace and love for Christ Jesus. It does not fear the pseudo-jesus of modernity’s spineless ecumenism. In fact, such a pseudo-jesus is actively promoted. It only serves secularism’s goal of a heartless religion, one imprisoned in the flow of emotions that have not been purified of the passions.

A heart that is not undergoing purification in Christ is easily manipulated by the false appeals of compassion, unity, care, and tolerance that the secular world makes. Men will give their hearts to something. Thus, we witness around us an immense battle for the hearts and minds of people. What will educate and inform our hearts and minds?

For the Christian, we must be founding our hearts and minds on Christ. This first and foremost is a way of life, for Christ Jesus is Life. We are gifted a vast treasury of testimonies from the saints by which we are able to qualitatively gauge our observing of, and walking in, the way of Christ. We have the Scriptures and the writings and lives of the saints.

The fallen world is constantly seeking to undermine this life in Christ. It seeks to deviously “re-educate” people, most of all Christians. It seeks to convince Christians to accept an anti-gospel. Thus, we must diligently be educating our hearts in Christ alone. Only through Him will we safely navigate the storms of our times.

In the wonderful book “Saint of the Prison,” which is primarily about the holy New Martyr Valariu Gafencu, there are two excellent analyses by Fr. Ciprian Gradinaru. One at the beginning of the book and the other at the end. His expose on the goals of modernity’s “re-education” is of the utmost importance for our times. Some may have read the book; it is, in my opinion, a must-read. But some may have not, so below I provide an excerpt from his keen observations.

I believe it will be self-evident to the observant reader just how much Fr. Ciprian’s insights apply to our own day and situations. Yet, I have read around enough to know that his insights are not his alone. They indeed harmonize with other solid Orthodox voices, even those of saints. Let us indeed take heed.

The great saint of the 20th century, St. Justin Popovich, teaches, “All the European humanisms strive consciously or subconsciously, but they strive unceasingly, for one result: to replace the Gospel of the God-man with a gospel according to man, to replace the philosophy of the God-man with a philosophy according to man, to replace the culture of the God-man with a culture according to man. In brief, they seek to replace life according to the God-man with life according to man” (Orthodox Faith and Life in Christ, pg. 102).

I will briefly note the great importance of comprehending secularism’s goal of replacing Christ through “re-education,” which Fr. Dimitry addresses. For Christians, this is vital to digest. We will be offered a “christ,” but a different christ. It is subtle.

Surveying the past few years, one may observe that even in Orthodoxy novel modes and restrictions were introduced that influence the ethos and manner in which people approach Christ the Lord. These modes also influenced how persons interacted with other persons. Such modes inevitably influenced the manner of thinking about the holiness of the Church and the Mysteries, and thus Christ Himself, for the Church in Her reality is His body. Is it possible that a re-education was and is taking place? Although for many it may have been unintentionally and unwittingly facilitated. Through certain novel and material expressions were (and are) Christians being subjected to a sort of re-education?

Much has taken place and although a seeming retreat, thankfully, is transpiring, the psychological (in the true sense of the word) effects will be felt for years.

It is also important to grasp that it matters not to the spirit of this re-education which sociopolitical system it employs; it is willing to utilize each of the seeming dialectical opposites – Communism and Capitalism – to advance itself.

May we guard our hearts in the way of the Lord and keep them from being “re-educated” according to this fallen world and its pseudo-christs. Sadly, not a few Christians have adsorbed the “re-education” and are working even from within Orthodoxy to promote it as a “new way,” a new and more “enlightened orthodoxy.” Such are false prophets.

Begin excerpt-

The ultimate goal of the communist ideology was the creation of a “new man.” The communists believed that re-education was the only way to accomplish this …

However, one who studies the communist re-education in depth cannot but acknowledge the following evidence: the same principles of re-education are applied nowadays, though in a more disguised and perfidious manner. This ideology, which highly influences and governs the present society, is characterized by the same spirit of antichrist as the communist ideology. The goal is the same, only the means are different. Valeriu’s dearest friend, Ioan Ianolide, already noticed in 1985: “The one who is willing to see, can identify the re-education process all throughout the world, as well as the dialectical materialism, the atheistic, the immoral, the decadent and the repellent remolding.

This was predictable for people endowed with spiritual understanding. When Communism reached its climax and nothing seemed to be able to stand in its way, Valeriu said, “Communism will perish, but what is essential is what will take its place.” In the 1980s Ianolide wrote: “I feel that in the foreseeable future, the powers of Communism will be annihilated, yet I remain sad and worried.” Sad because he can see that the same individuals responsible for unleashing Communism upon the country2 are now turning into the masters of the coming world; worried because he foresees the perspective of a worldwide dictatorship, without opponents and without precedent.

If we consider Ianolide’s prophetic words, we can see that our own world resembles a prison more and more. He said that this is an imprisonment that is tougher than what they had to endure because now only a few people are aware of the totalitarian ideology and the anti-Christian way of life, which is slowly conquering the world. Released by Christ for scrutiny, darkness reigns (Luke 22:53). Nowadays our prison cells are guarded by our own passions, fed and cultivated by a consumerist society.

In the communist prisons, torturers used all resources available to force prisoners to deny Christ. Nowadays, rejecting Christ is done voluntarily, as people are seduced from an early age to embrace a lifestyle which is opposite to the one to which Christ calls us. In prisons, torturers were trying to prevent every person from having any kind of privacy or moments of prayer. Nowadays, people voluntarily surrender their own privacy in favor of TV, Internet or anything which might steal their serenity and opportunity to be alone with Christ. Torturers did everything in their power to keep the prisoners away from their own families and to get them discouraged for an easier control over them. In present times, divorce has become a lifestyle.

The spirit of “re-education” is the same – both in Communism and in Capitalism – that is to say, it is characterized by a rejection of faith in God, by the giving up of traditional moral values, and by selfishness, pride, betrayal, and cowardice. This is the Spirit of Antichrist. The methods used are just slightly different: if during Communism, they wanted to obtain “the new man” through force, through demolishing and closing churches and monasteries, and through torturing of killing opponents, in capitalism, the methods used are “softer” and can slowly seduce even those who, under obvious Christian persecution, would have confessed and become martyrs.

In essence, re-education has two main goals. First, the removal of God from people’s consciousness, the reshaping of people’s way of thinking, so that man’s heart becomes insensible to God’s grace, incapable of true and profound feelings. Man is thus condemned to live in a superficial manner, not only physically, but also spiritually and culturally.

Second, achieving the perfection of the “new man,” modeled so that the Devil can easily take possession over him or her. Such a man would be ready to receive Antichrist and enthrone him in the “holy place” (Matthew 24:15). that belongs to God at the end of times.

An important clarification is needed in this context: the correct translation of the word “antichrist” is not “against Christ” but “in place of Christ / replacing Christ.” In other words, the enemy no longer confronts visibly and directly Christ, but he seeks to take His place, to remove Him from people’s consciousness, to neutralize people’s discernment and their capacity to choose freely.”

Fr. Zechariah Lynch

My name is Zechariah Lynch. I am an Orthodox Christian. I am an Orthodox priest. I have freely given myself to be influenced and guided by the Orthodox Faith: it is the main foundation upon which I will endeavor to base my thoughts and observations for this blog.

I believe in things like Truth, Goodness, and Beauty; that humanity is subject to higher principles. Ultimately I believe in God.

I will be mixing the proverbial “religion and politics.” I will also simply be reflecting on various issues of life. Sometimes everyday things; sometimes global events. An organic and cohesive philosophy spans all aspects of life. Everyone has a “philosophy” for life. But I am not a relativist, thus I do not think that all ideas are true and equal. Although ideas they may be.

My articles are my thoughts and opinions. Although, as stated above, I have diligently sought to guide them by the standard of Orthodox Christianity.

My writing credentials do not come from the fact that I have an M.Div, for instance. My credentials remain in the fact that I am striving to base my thoughts and way of life upon the Revelation of the Holy Trinity as given to the Eklessia. Or in the words of Fr. Seraphim (Rose), “Far be it from me to presume to speak for the Church; but I can at least speak of some of the things I think I have learned from Her.”

This Revelation is very objective. Humanity has not been left without standards. God revealed Himself by becoming Man. He left us the Church, His Body, as the “pillar and ground of truth” (cf. 1 Tim. 3:15); we have the testimony of Jesus Christ and the Apostles – the Scriptures. We have a two thousand year experience of Christian living and teaching (tradition). These are all very concrete and empirical.
