NICK GRIFFIN HELPING TO SAVE OLDHAM’S STATION CANOPY

HELPING TO SAVE OLDHAM’S STATION CANOPY

Nick Griffin was pleased to respond recently to the ‘Save Oldham’s Station Canopy’ campaign, with a donation from his English Fair Fund towards their funding appeal.

The East Lancashire Railway is raising funds to buy the Lancashire & Yorkshire canopy which currently stands at Oldham Mumps station. The station is due to be demolished following the closure of the Oldham Loop line between Manchester and Rochdale and the East Lancashire Railway has been offered the chance to buy the canopy. The canopy is an historic remnant of the great achievements in rail transport of the Victoria era and Nick believes that it is important to preserve this piece of Oldham’s heritage for future generations.

Arrangements have been made for the canopy to be safely dismantled and transported to Bury, where – subject to sufficient funding being raised – it will be renovated and part of the structure re-erected on Platform 2 at Bury Bolton Street station.
